As of 2000, the population was 17,998. Its county seat is Wahpeton. Richland County is part of the Wahpeton, ND MN Micropolitan Statistical Area. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,446 square miles (3,744 km²), of which, 1,437 square miles (3,721 km²) of it is land and 9 square miles (23 km²) of it (0.62%) is water. The Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties one in southeast North Dakota and one in west central Minnesota, anchored by the city of Wahpeton, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the SA had a population of 25,136 (though a July 1, 2008 estimate placed the population at 22,620). The Wahpeton Micropolitan Statistical Area is a component of the Fargo Wahpeton, ND-MN Combined Statistical Area.
